Confronting Burnout, Stress and Anxiety

Confronting Burnout, Stress and Anxiety

Some people take a grand vacation to address the problem of exhaustion and boredom. However, it may not be effective in totally eliminating the sense of disillusionment, stress and anxiety. Here are some ways people resort to in dealing with a stressful situation like burnout.

Keywords:
stress and anxiety

It’s like being in a dead end…finally reaching a stage in your career when you come face-to face with a complete sense of disillusionment with your job, and perhaps, with yourself. You no longer get any satisfaction nor fulfillment in everything that you do, and no one can talk you out of whatever decision you have already made. It’s the point of no return. It’s about time that you give yourself, not just a break, but freedom from stress and anxiety that have been tearing your world apart. It’s simply called burnout.
Burnout is a deep-seated sense of disillusionment and exhaustion with a job or career that used to provide so much excitement and motivation. No one is exempted from burnout. It happens even to highly committed and passionate individuals who encounter problems or get involved in situations where their enthusiasm and passion are gradually being stripped away until they eventually lose the drive and will to go on. It can be a situation or a thought that can weigh you down or make you feel frustrated and angry.
Stress and anxiety are normal parts of everyday life. Both can motivate a person to be productive and to rise up to the challenge of tough situations. However, too much stress and too much anxiety can be harmful and may cause physical, emotional, and psychological problems like infection, heart diseases, and depression. Stress and anxiety at workplace can lead to burnout.
Taking a much-needed vacation may help address the problem of exhaustion and boredom but it may not be effective in totally eliminating the sense of disillusionment, stress and anxiety. Here are some ways people resort to in dealing with a stressful situation like burnout:
· Going Through The Motions – Some people deal with burnout by not dealing with it at all. To accept it and not do anything about it is one of the worst way to deal with burnout. Such indifference will soon result to anger and bitterness as opportunities pass you by.
· Career Change – When the passion and drive that used to inspire you to do your best have been snuffed out, disabling you from going on further with your career, it’s time to consider making that shift. A new profession will certainly give you a new perspective. However, changing career may not credit some of the precious experiences you have already gained as relevant to your newfound endeavor. Moreover, competition will most likely come from much younger people who are willing to accept lower salaries thus affecting your bargaining power.
· Changing Jobs – a change of job within the same field of endeavor or profession is just like having the same job but in a totally different environment. Your skills and the previous experiences you have acquired will be transferable and allows you to re-dedicate your original goals to start anew, without being reminded of the burdens that come with staying on the same job.
Individuals who were disillusioned with their previous employers may benefit in job change. However, the downside of this response is the possibility that you may end up with the same situation again if the cause of burnout is the job itself and not the other factors such as management and co-workers.
· Wake-up Call – Some people manage through burnout situations by considering it as a trigger to re-evaluate their lifestyles and what they want to achieve. This form of stress management is one of the most positive ways to cope with burnout. It is dealing with the sense of failure by talking with somebody who may have experienced the same situation and help you realized without bias why after all the inputs you have generously given and efforts you have exerted to do well did not worked out to your advantage. This person should not be from the same company to avoid prejudice which may only complicate matters. Sometimes, this is all that is needed to relieve stress and anxiety that leads to burnout. The realization may lead you to yourself or to other people as the one to be blamed. But what is important is to be able to move on without dwelling further on blame and guilt.
Coming to terms with the situation will allow people to learn that hard work is not the only thing that matters, that major achievements need the support of other people, and most importantly, that they are not superhuman to cure all ills. They will learn to spot and communicate problems early on to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Consult with your healthcare providers regarding therapies and stress management programs in order to help you move on from a burnout situation, stress and anxiety to rise above the demands of a new and challenging career.

Concrete Evidence That Alcohol Does Have Effects On Sexual Health

Concrete Evidence That Alcohol Does Have Effects On Sexual Health

For as long as anyone can remember, alcohol has been known to have effects on a person’s sexual health and behavior, though no one had any physiological data to explain why. Recent research conducted at Pennsylvania State University, however, has finally found data that might form a new baseline for research into how alcohol affects sexual behavior and performance.

Keywords:
sexual health

For centuries, alcoholic beverages have been linked to a temporary decrease in male sexual inhibitions. Nobody’s really been sure of why this was the case, other than the alcohol having an effect on the parts and biochemicals in the brain that regulate things like sexual health. Side effects like increased arousal and decreased inhibitions were accepted as part and parcel of exposure to enough amounts of alcohol, though only recently has there been any research conducted into finding the physiological reasons behind these effects.

Using an animal model to study the effects of alcohol, research teams in Pennsylvania State University attempted to find the exact physiological effects of chronic alcohol exposure to a person’s physical, mental, and sexual health. The team noted that there was a distinct lack of studies involving animal models to look at the effects of chronic exposure to alcohol. Kyung-An Han, the leader of the team, also noted that their research differed because they administered regular doses of ethanol – the main intoxicating component of alcohol – to the animals. This is in contrast to the short-term dosing method used by previous attempts at this study. Han believes their approach would produce more reliable and realistic results.

The first result they observed that was related to sexual health was the drop in courtship inhibitions among the intoxicated test subjects, which were fruit flies. Fruit fly males, which normally only initiated courtship with females, suddenly exhibited courtship behavior with other males. Han believes that dopamine was somehow involved, because this behavior was not observed when they altered the temperature to prevent dopamine from being transmitted to the brain. It was also noted that continued exposure to ethanol increased the likelihood that the male fruit flies would initiate courtship behavior with other males.

Chronic tolerance of the effects of the ethanol was also observed in the flies, which meant that the more exposed they were, the larger the doses required to “intoxicate” them. This has also been noted in other animals, though there have been very few scientific studies dedicated to exploring the long-term possibilities and effects of such exposure. The only concrete medical knowledge into the matter concerns the effects of long-term alcohol use in various human organs and systems, but no real data on the effects it might have on sexual health and behavior.

It was also noted that inter-male courtship behavior among the fruit flies seemed to be more likely with age. The research team found that the older the fruit fly, the more susceptible it was to the effects of ethanol exposure. In theory, this holds true for most other animals. Han’s team observed that the older the fly was and the lower the tolerance for ethanol, the more likely it was to exhibit inter-male courtship behavior.

Han’s team hopes that their study would prove to form an effective, reliable baseline for further research into the cellular and molecular interactions with alcohol in animals. Han hoped that the study would help provide evidence that sexual health and behavior was not only influenced by developmental factors, but by post-developmental influences as well.

Regrow Hair For Men

Regrow Hair For Men

Procerin is a natural regrow hair treatment for men which actually inhibits 5-alpha reductase production and encourages hair regrowth. It is also safe to use without any side effects and is available in both pill and topical solution form without prescription.

Treatments to regrow hair in men are sought after by almost every individual suffering from hair loss. Men generally in the age group 18 to 35. It is in this period that men start losing hair and putting on widows’ peaks’ and receding hairlines! (Not that they have a choice!) Regrow Hair treatments for men are thus much prized and secretly guarded by the seekers.

There are a lot of hair loss treatments for men – available by prescription and over the counter. It is also true that most of these synthetic formulations have their own peculiar side effects and are not totally safe.

The causes for male hair loss range from diet and nutrition, drug usage to genetics. The most common cause of hair thinning and loss is attributed to Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic Alopecia is characterized by high levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the scalp. DHT is responsible for slowing down and eventually halting hair growth. It also ends up making hair brittle, lighter in color, and fall out at a much faster rate than normal.

The presence of DHT can be traced to 5 Alpha Reductase, which is an enzyme produced naturally in the body. This enzyme converts male hormone testosterone into the hormone known as Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase presence within the body is thus the safest way to preventing hair loss and male pattern balding, another name for Androgenetic Alopecia.

Procerin is a natural regrow hair treatment for men which actually inhibits 5-alpha reductase production and encourages hair regrowth. It is also safe to use without any side effects and is available in both pill and topical solution form without prescription.

Procerin is made from Saw Palmetto, Magnesium, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin B-6, Pyroxidine 5mg, CJ-11 Factor, CJ-9 Factor, and a proprietary blend of Gotu Kola, Nettles, Pumpkin seed meal, Siberian Ginseng, Yohimbe, Muira Puma Root, Uwa Ursi and more. The active ingredients in Procerin stop the transformation of testosterone into DHT, and reduce levels of DHT present in the scalp.

Procerin has also been seen to work well with other formulations like Rogaine and Propecia which address different phases of DHT production.

Do You Use Your Body As A Garbage Can?

Do you clean off your plate even when you are already full? Do you finish the dinner scraps just because you can’t stand the thought of throwing out the food? Do you eat that last spoonful of chili in the pot just because nobody in your family wanted to finish it? To get rid of this extra food, do you choose to throw it right in your mouth?

If that sounds like you, you are not alone. This behavior is very common. Most of us have been taught not to be wasteful. When we were little, we were told to clean off our plates, so it is deeply ingrained in our minds. We feel guilty about throwing out good food, especially since we know that there are so many starving people in this world.

In addition, since we paid money for the food, we perceive leaving food on our plate as wasting money. It is especially true in restaurants – if there is not enough leftovers to take home, most of us will clean off our plate because we feel we have to get our money’s worth.

Obviously, those last pieces of food that we eat just so we don’t have to throw them out go right to our waist and hips. Day after day, it really adds up. All this food that we eat after we are already full turns into tens of pounds of body fat. You avoid wasting the food, but instead you waste your health, your goals and your weight loss efforts.

Next time you are about to eat because you feel guilty for the wasted food, tell yourself:

- You Are Not A Garbage Can!

Instead of throwing the unwanted food in a trash, you are throwing it into your stomach. By doing that, you are treating your body as a garbage can. You are not the medium to gather stuff that nobody wanted to eat!

To get over the guilt associated with wasted food, think of it from the perspective that this excess food is actually serving a better purpose when it’s thrown out than it would have if you’d eaten it. If you’d eaten this excess food, this food would do harm (make you gain weight). If that food is thrown out, it has no benefit, but it does not do any harm either. No use versus harm – throwing the food out is the lesser of the two evils.

When you do clean off your plate, it definitely does not help any of those starving people that you feel so guilty about. Also, don’t think that you are wasting your money if you don’t finish all the food you paid for. The money is already spent – you are not going to gain more money by eating more!

If you break the habit of cleaning off your plate when you are not hungry, you will automatically start losing weight. Treat your body well. Don’t use it in the same way you’d use a garbage can.

Do you remember those good ole days when fresh air was free!

Aw those where the days, you could go outside you’re door and breathe in to your hearts content and it wouldn’t cost a penny! O.K… I know I’m being a bit over the top here, but can I ask you… would you pay for fresh air?

Aw those where the days, you could go outside you’re door and breathe in to your hearts content and it wouldn’t cost a penny! O.K… I know I’m being a bit over the top here, but can I ask you… would you pay for fresh air?

A couple of years ago you’d never have thought of going into a shop to buy a bottle of water, if you said it to people back then that you were thinking of selling water in your shop you’d have been told that you were crazy and who was going to buy water when all you had to do was stick your head under the tap for free!

But times have change and attitudes have changed. With the great advances we’ve made with new technology unfortunately we also have produced a lot of waste products and gases. The way we live nowadays it seems harder to find somewhere you can go to get a breath of fresh air, you watch the footage on TV of people commuting through smog or in some of the oriental countries where all you can see is cyclists traveling around with what looks like doctors masks on their faces.

So what are you to do?… O.k. you could travel to mountain top get some there but this option isn’t available to everyone and it would also be a bit time consuming if you could do it a couple of times a week but, what about the average Joe.

Well your problems is solved if you live in Columbus in the U.S (although they are popping up all over the place), you can now try out an oxygen bar where you can sit and have a cup of tea and put on a mask and breath in pure oxygen. The bar (no alcohol is served) is supposed to be doing really well. Its clients use it to help relieve headaches and the local hockey team uses it before their matches for an added energy.

It may seem a bit crazy to some of you, the thought of people paying for air but then they said that about bottled water and look what happened there.

Bird Flu: A Historical Perspective

Bird Flu: A Historical Perspective

Recent outbreaks have put bird flu disease at the center stage of the global health community. The possibility of a global pandemic is serious enough that deaths caused by bird flu warrant a closer examination.

Keywords:
bird flu, avian flu, h5n1, health

Recent outbreaks have put avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu disease, at the center stage of the global health community. From relative anonymity, the disease acquired notoriety for itself when it claimed more than fifty human lives. The deaths from bird flu disease are relatively small when compared to the number of deaths from other diseases. However, the possibility of a global pandemic is serious enough that deaths caused by bird flu warrant a closer examination and alarm.

Another pandemic waiting to happen

Officials at the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the world is ripe for another influenza pandemic. An influenza pandemic occurs roughly every 30-40 years. The last influenza pandemic, which originated in Hong Kong in 1969, claimed 34,000 lives in the United States and even more in the Asian region. Although the viral subtype of the disease is still in circulation, the human body has already developed antibodies for it.

Historical precedence is not enough of a basis towards setting off global alarm bells. However, the patterns seen in the outbreaks point to the possibility of another influenza pandemic. There are an increasing number of cases wherein humans have been infected with the bird flu virus and the death toll from the disease is now more than 50.

One of the first signs of an impending pandemic is the crossing over of the disease from birds to humans. WHO is closely keeping its eye on the occurrence of a first case of human to human transmission of the bird flu virus. The human to human transmission of the disease will pose greater risks of infection to humans, which would effectively signal the start of a pandemic. To date, there are no recorded cases of bird flu being transmitted from an infected human to another.

To date, all human cases of bird flu were contracted by victims after having direct contact with infected animals and their secretions. However, the global health community is very much concerned because the bird flu virus mutates easily and is constantly evolving, and the first human to human transmission of the virus may just be around the corner.

Three global influenza pandemics: a brief history

Three major influenza pandemics have occurred: in 1918, 1957 and 1968. The first pandemic, the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919, had the highest mortality among the three pandemics. In less than a year, 20 to 40 million people died from the Spanish Flu, with over 50,000 lives claimed in the United States alone. Simultaneous outbreaks of the Spanish Flu were first detected in Europe and some parts of the United States. The infection spread to more areas through ships that traveled between the United States and Europe. Asia and Africa were eventually affected. The first wave of the pandemic was highly contagious although it was not deadly. The second wave, however, was deadly and occurred shortly in France, Sierra Leona and United States. It registered a ten-fold increase in mortality.

In 1957, a second pandemic occurred. Called the Asian Flu because it was first detected in Hong Kong and Singapore, it was much milder than the Spanish Flu, claiming between one and four million lives. When the second pandemic hit, the people were more prepared and knew what to expect. This was due largely to the world’s experience with the first pandemic. The Asian Flu virus was soon isolated in Japanese and Singaporean laboratories. The findings helped the World Health Organization alert the world about the onset of a pandemic and vaccines were immediately produced and distributed.

The most recent influenza pandemic happened in 1968 and lasted for a year. Dubbed as the Hong Kong Flu, it was first detected in China and later spread to Hong Kong where it escalated at an alarming rate. Like the Asian Flu, the Hong Kong Flu claimed between one and four million lives. It reached Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, particularly California.

New Research Links Causes Of Hair Loss To Nutritional Deficiency

New Research Links Causes Of Hair Loss To Nutritional Deficiency

Learn about the causes of hair loss, and what you can do to prevent hair loss. Plus an interesting new piece of research that holds promise for both men and women concerned with hair loss.

Keywords:
causes of hair loss, hair loss

Whilst it may be comforting to know that humans are not alone in suffering hair loss (primates such as monkeys also experience thinning on their head) – understanding the causes of hair loss means we can take proactive action. Even though genetics does play a part, new research has uncovered a nutritional deficiency link in both men and women. And other factors, such as stress, and poor hair care, are well within our capacity to change.

The genetic link in hair loss has been well studied. It is associated with male and female pattern hair loss, or alopecia. In these individuals there is an increased sensitivity to the sex hormone, DHT. DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone, and is a powerful metabolite of testosterone. It contributes to men’s unique gender characteristics, as well as facial and body hair, and the deepening of men’s voices at puberty.

DHT causes the growth cycle of hair follicles to shorten, which in turn reduces the size of the hair shaft. Increasingly narrower hair is grown, sometimes as fine as fluff, and in more extreme cases, there is complete hair loss in that area.

In women, estrogen usually counteracts the effects of testosterone. But when women go through menopause, or suffer hormonal imbalances, the reduction in estrogen can lead to female pattern baldness. Fortunately, this is not as drastic in its hair loss effects as male pattern baldness. Instead the hair tends to thin, and the crown parting becomes wider.

But a very interesting study by L’Oreal has linked an iron deficiency to hair loss, in both men and women. This was a placebo controlled, double blind study in which 13,000 healthy men and women took a supplement, and had the ferritin (iron) levels in their blood measured and cross referenced with information on their hair loss.

The results showed not only a link between hair loss and iron deficiency, but they were able to estimate the risk of hair loss in a certain level of iron deficiency. For example, women whose blood ferritin levels dropped from a normal 70µg/l to 40µg/l, had a 28% higher chance of severe hair loss. The post menopausal women in the study who had severe hair loss all had much lower levels of iron than the women who didn’t have severe hair loss.

The problem with iron supplementation, however, is that excess iron builds up in the body’s tissues and becomes toxic. It has been associated with an increased risk of developing chronic illnesses. Iron levels can be tested by a doctor, so if hair loss is a concern, its best to get your iron levels tested first before taking iron supplements.

Other potential causes of hair loss – or at least, contributing factors are stress and poor hair care practices. Not brushing hair regularly, or washing it regularly, can affect the normal hair growth cycle.

When hair that is naturally at the end of its life cycle is removed through brushing, it allows another hair to grow underneath it. Regular brushing naturally removes dead hair that is ready to fall out. Not removing that hair means new growth cannot occur, as the old hair smothers the new growth. Dirt and oil build up can have a similar effect, so its important to wash hair regularly.

Stress can affect the circulation of nutrients and oxygen to the scalp, by causing the muscles in the scalp to tighten. If this happens over a long period of time, premature hair loss can occur. This cause of hair loss is distinct from male pattern baldness (which is hormonal), but it can certainly exacerbate the condition. And stress reduction techniques are simple things that can be added to a daily routine, to prevent hair loss, and improve the overall quality of life.

Exercise: The Key to Healthy Skin

Exercise: The Key to Healthy Skin

The article talks about the benefits of exercise and other physical activities in the development of healthy skin. This is achieved when the body gets rid of the toxins and other bacteria through sweat. Physical activities should be coupled with proper diet and hydration to achieve overall health improvements and healthy-looking skin

Keywords:
skin care

Regular exercise and physical activities like weight training, yoga, and aerobic exercises have been known to improve physique and aid in weight-loss. People workout regularly so that they can develop a more toned and leaner physique. They do this by burning fat through exercise. Working out also promotes greater muscle density, bone strength, and helps reduce the risk of breaking bones as one gets older. Recent medical studies suggest that regular exercise and physical activities may also be beneficial to overall skin health and clean the skin of acne and other impurities. Adding exercise in a daily routine is essential for skin care.

Exercise improves the skin by improving the blood circulation in the body and, therefore, provide oxygen and other nutrients to the skin cells. As one sweats, the body removes toxins through the open pores of the skin. This process effectively cleanses the pores from dead skin cells, dirt, and excess sebum. Sebum is the oil secretions of the sebaceous glands and may clog pores that cause the production of acne. This substance is scentless but its bacterial breakdown may produce odors. In addition to these benefits, exercise enables the kidneys and liver to function properly. These developments makes the elimination of toxins from the body more effective and efficient. It is always best to take a shower after a workout since bathing washes away any waste material and bacteria that is present on the skin. It also prevents the buildup of bacteria that is attracted to sweat. These bacteria may cause body odor and the development of acne.

Drinking enough water after working out may guarantee proper hydration of the body and help reduce skin dryness and is important factor in skin care. However, it is advised to drink the right amounts of water because too much or too little may bring unwanted effects. Needless to say, water is essential in eliminating body toxins and in replacing all the water that was lost from sweating during exercise.
A better physique and healthy-looking skin are not the only benefits of exercise and physical activities. They also have emotional and mental benefits. These activities are good for stress relief and in keeping the mind active and focused. This is possible because of moderate or intense physical activities may prompt the body to produce substances called endorphins. These substances are produced by the brain that may elevate one’s mood and eliminate feelings of stress and anxiety. This effect is called by many health experts as the “runner’s high.

Furthermore, individuals who want to engage in exercise and other physical activities should consult health professionals or train with a professional instructor. Because improper or too much training may do more harm than good. Extreme exercise may increase the production of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. These hormones aid the body switch to more efficient fat-burning metabolism to preserve glycogen in the muscles and aid blood vessels in the delivery of oxygen to the muscles.

Stress overload can occur if an individual does not reduce the intensity of training even for short periods. This may cause an increase in white blood cells that eliminate bacteria, viruses, and even cancer cells. When the intense exercise is finished, the number of immune cells may decrease. It is theorized that any viruses or bacteria present in this stage may multiply and cause infection which may weaken the immune system. Exercising is critical in overall health and skin care. Adding them in one’s lifestyle may lead to the development of healthy-looking skin.

Denial: The Fabric of Civilization Itself?

Denial: The Fabric of Civilization Itself?

Denial has been a part of the human psyche and social contract for as long as people have figured out they need each other around. However, recent research is starting to show that denial may be significantly more integral to the very nature of society and social relationships that what one might expect.

Keywords:
mental health, emotional health, relationship

All civilization, an anonymous pessimist once said, is founded on denial, denial, denial. Freud once theorized that people enter a state of denial in defense of their mental health, attempting to avoid things in reality that might damage the fragility of the inner ego. Others theorize that denial is a defense mechanism, allowing a person to avoid having to face some unwanted facet of reality or of their own personalities. Regardless of which theory is correct, it is beyond doubt that everyone is in denial about something and that this denial might actually be an integral component of maintaining stable mental health. However, recent evidence is starting to reveal what some have suspected all along: denial touches on emotional health and relationships too, and not necessarily in a destructive manner either.

According to Michael McCullough, a psychologist and author of the upcoming book “Beyond Revenge: The Evolution of the Forgiveness Instinct,” denial is all part of the social game humans play. The ability to actively and subconsciously ignore the little deceptions and flaws inherent in ourselves and other humans is apparently a core component of our being able to maintain cordial social relationships with other people. Apparently, if people did not go into “denial mode” when faced with something about another person that they are uncomfortable with or don’t like, people would effectively and quickly terminate all social contact with that person. The fact that people also appear psychologically wired to do this to themselves and others at all times on a subconscious level serves to enforce just how critical denial is to the mental, emotional, and social framework that people form around themselves.

Denial also seems to play an interesting role in a person’s moral compass. A recent study was conducted to see just how much dishonesty a person could commit without feeling dishonest about it. A simple test was given out to students, with some test subjects receiving answer sheets that had the answers partially marked out. The study revealed that the students were generally unaware of how dishonest they actually were, with most of them feeling that they weren’t dishonest at all. There were a few, however, that did feel as if they cheated, but only to a certain point. The conclusion that the research them came to was that, for as long as people can find a way to deny that anything wrong is being done or going on, then they can mentally pretend that nothing happened.

However, there is also another level of the denial game that people are playing, which is the semi-conscious acknowledgment of it. Essentially, this part can be summed up in the words “I saw that, but I’ll let it slide this time.” There are, of course, a variety of possible reasons for someone to do this. For the most part, this ties down to an attempt to preserve a current relationship by avoiding confrontation or conflict, particularly if the relationship in question is already on thin ice.

This, like the earlier form, stems from a psychological need to maintain cordial connections with the people around you. Some evolutionary psychologists link this to early human interactions, where people found ways not to hold other people accountable for being unable to render aid. There is a limit to this sort of thinking, of course, but for as long as the mind can conjure reasonable doubt, then people will conjure reasonable doubt. So, in the end, the aforementioned pessimist may actually be right. All civilization may well be built on denial, denial, denial.
