Drug Addiction Riding Behind Mental Illness?

Drug Addiction Riding Behind Mental Illness?

For many years, experts have noted that most drug addicts are also suffering from mental health problems, such as social anxiety disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. Recent studies have shown that if the brain is suffering from a psychological disorder, it makes the body more vulnerable to addiction.

Keywords:
social anxiety disorder

Drug addiction, despite being seen by many as some sort of failing of the mind, is not listed as a mental health disorder. Substance abuse has escaped that category despite the fact that comparatively less troublesome ailments or sicknesses like social anxiety disorder and (in some circles) insomnia are listed as possible or acknowledged mental health conditions. The facts known about drug addiction show that it is a biological and physiological condition, with the body craving the effects that these narcotics have on the brain. The divide between mental disorder and drug addiction is a very thin, blurry line, but there is a line. However, recent research is starting to reveal information that is making this line seem even thinner and more blurred than it already is. It would appear that drug addiction and mental conditions, such as social anxiety disorder and depression, are not as distinct form one another as initially thought.

In layman’s terms, when one person shows signs of being a drug addict, there’s usually some sort of mental health condition riding the coattails, though not everyone who’s crazy is a junkie, and not every drug addict is insane. The psychological problems tend to vary from patient to patient, though things like social anxiety disorder are common in teenage addicts, along with depression, performance anxiety, and a few behavioral disorders. Schizophrenia, bipolar and unipolar depression, and other personality disorders are also commonly observed to tag along with addictions, though not always with narcotics and other illegal drugs. Nicotine and alcohol addicts also tend to have a host of mental health problems riding in their wake as well.

Some recent studies are showing that damage to certain regions of the brain may be responsible for making people more likely to develop addictions, with the amygdala taking center stage in the study’s findings. This does not take away anything from the natural addictive abilities of substances such as alcohol, opioids, and nicotine, but it does serve to explain why some people appear more likely to become addicts than others on a psychological level. The studies also discovered that addictions for people with damaged amygdala are not only more prone to addiction, they are also less likely to discern from one substance to another in their abuse. Findings showed that it didn’t seem to matter what the substance was or what the effects it had on the mind and body were, so long as they had the potential to be habit-forming and the subjects were exposed to it regularly.

Obviously, since mental health problems such as social anxiety disorder and dissociative identity disorder can make someone more likely to become an addict, there are things that need consideration. A number of drug addicts can and do claim that external factors forced them into their substance abuse, with several of these reasons being highly similar to things that trigger mental illness. With psychological conditions now leading to substance abuse, is there now reason to believe that those who are genetically predisposed towards mental illness are, logically, also more likely to become addicts?

Exercise in minutes – Exercise for People with no time to Spare

Exercise in minutes. All exercise does not have to be in the gym or regimented.

You can’t count the benefits of exercising. They are just too numerous. They help control weight, help weight loss, improve your attitude and generally make you feel better. The experts are now telling us that just thirty minutes a day of moving will improve your health.

While I must accept the opinions of so many experts, I still find setting aside the time is a problem in my busy life. If you experience the same problem, you might try some of these ideas to get you going:

1. When you go to the mall or grocery store, don’t park next to the front door of the store. Leave your car as far from the store as you can. This will give you more of a walk in an effortless way.

2. When the weather suits you, go outside and clean the yard. Just bending and stretching to pick up leaves and trash will burn calories.

3. Try taking the dog for a walk. Your dog will enjoy this very much and keep you moving.

4. At work, perhaps you can walk at lunch time. I’ve found that some of my office staff are willing to walk some days with me. This makes the time go faster and yet, I’ve exercised during the daylight hours.

I’m sure you can find many more reasons and ideas to help motivate you in the right direction. I find that walking in the sunshine helps improve my mood and that I will just make the time when the sun is out. Find your reason to help yourself.

Diabetes, Psychosomatic Illness, And Erectile Dysfunction

Diabetes, Psychosomatic Illness, And Erectile Dysfunction

Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) is a sexual health problem that is now rising among men. This condition is characterized by a man’s failure to perform an erection, keep an erection long enough to finish the sexual intercourse, or fail to have an ejaculation. This is the reason why men fail to perform well in bed. This ailment is not just a condition caused by old age or disease. Unhealthy lifestyles which includes excessive drinking, smoking, and unhealthy diets may contribute to the development of ED. In addition to these factors, ED can also be caused by physical abnormalities or it could be a product of mental disturbance. Understanding these factors can help people suffering from ED improve sexual performance and overall well-being.

Diabetes has also been known to cause ED because it affects some, if not all the bodily systems such as the circulatory, nervous, and the endocrine systems. The organs in these systems all work in harmony to let blood flow into the penis so that erection can take place. In addition, a number of medical studies show that diabetic persons are more likely to have low testosterone levels. Testosterone is a hormone that is responsible for the enhancement of libido or sexual energy. Men with type 1 diabetes are more likely to become impotent once they reach 40 years of age.

However, horny goat weed (Epemedium) and sildenafil are proven to be a safe and effective treatment for ED caused by diabetes. They work by improving blood flow in the penis and thereby enhance sexual pleasure and performance. It also helps men increase their stamina, last longer during sex, and reduce premature ejaculation. In addition, to its sexual benefits, horny goat weed is safe and may bring minimal side effects.

Impotence can also be a psychosomatic or psychological illness. Stress or exhaustion may be possible factors that contribute to this kind of sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that many ED cases are result of an underlying physical disorder. People who are unaware of of this disorder may develop stress build up over a period of time and worsen the case of sexual dysfunction. Individuals who are suffer from psychological ED may benefit from counseling. This may help identify unspoken reasons that can be remedied or reduce its effect through proper treatment.

To keep stress levels under control, the body’s well-being during stressful situations. The following methods have been proven to be very beneficial in relaxing the mind and therefore relieve mental and emotional troubles:

· Journaling or keeping a diary
· Cardiovascular and Resistance Exercises
· Ashtanga Yoga
· Listening to classical music
· Art Therapy
· Tai Chi Chuan
· Transcendental Meditation

In addition to these activities, a healthy and balanced diet should also be included in one’s daily routine. Plenty of vegetables, protein, and whole wheat foods can help reduce emotional troubles and make people feel more energized and less sluggish. Doing this will go a long way in getting individuals back in the mood. Sexual difficulties that are brought by diabetes and psychosomatic illness can be treated with alternative medicine and adjustments in lifestyles. However, health and medical experts should be consulted to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of activities or herbs. This condition can treated, but it should be done with advice of medical professionals. Improving sexual health by changing lifestyles, improving food regimens, or including exercise programs as part of one’s daily routines should be done to complement medical or alternative medicines.

Docs Medical Group moves towards OmniMD Integrated Electronic Medical Records(EMR) and Practice Management

Implementation of OmniMD electronic medical records and practice management has reduced the amount of support services and not to mention reduction in the number and cost of errors. Doctor can now save his favorite prescription and need not to write again same for different patients

Yonkers (NY) – Access of records for the multi-location multi specialty practice of over 20 physicians, is easier for Dr. Sindhwani since the implementation of OmniMD EMR – Electronic Medical Records and Practice Management system. One can see the changes in the workflow of the clinic, now you will find physicians and nurses carrying Tablet PCs or some handheld devices in the hands, all the paper work and bundles of files have vanished from the clinic and they edit the records on notebooks. Lab tests done a week back have been integrated with EMR and are available right there on patient chart.

Being a multi-location facility with specialties like Cardiology, Family Practice, Pediatrics, Internal, Medicine, Gastroenterology, Orthopedics, Pain Management, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Podiatry, Allergy and Immunology, Occupational Medicine and Endocrinology, it was imperative for DOCS to choose an integrated EMR and Practice Management solution that was easy to use, robust, and accessible from multiple locations.

Dr. Rajeev Sindhwani Director Docs Medical Group says, “OmniMD EMR and Practice Management has contributed immensely on both the physician office and administrative aspects of the Practice. The business case for EMR is based not only on its ability to lower costs, increases revenue and improves the efficiency but also on its role as a tool to enhance the quality of services provided.”

The whole practice is apparently on network, pulling up records from a centralized server and editing them on their respective Tablet PCs. The OmniMD EMR has been integrated with the hospital information system and an interface has also been established with laboratory center.

Implementation of OmniMD electronic medical records and practice management has reduced the amount of support services and not to mention reduction in the number and cost of errors. Doctor can now save his favorite prescription and need not to write again same for different patients; even more impressive is that, prescription can be sent directly to the local pharmacy automatically.

After the integration of OmniMD EMR, Docs Medical Group’s patient also expressed their satisfaction, as now they don’t have to wait too long, and also not required to fill long paper form at the front desk.

And from Docs point of view OmniMD EMR and Practice Management has helped them in saving considerable amount. Saving from reduction in ‘no-shows’, accurate coding, faster documentation and billing, immediate saving result from elimination of real estate space required for proper records. Before the implementation of EMR and Practice Management physician’s tend to miss some procedures which were performed on patient while billing, but OmniMD EMR has reduced this error up to a great extent by generating automatic billing and taking care of all ICD and CPT codes.

Hospitals and Practices are increasingly looking to information technology solutions to help deliver better quality patient care while containing costs. And Electronic Medical record companies are trying to develop best possible solution and services by keeping in mind the current trend of healthcare industry.

An independent review conducted by BioAlternatives Laboratories on Revivogen solution concluded a 90% DHT inhibition, which is quite amazing considering that only Dutasteride came close to that mark under other laboratory tests, and were talking about an oral drug whether Revivigen is a topical product. The study was commissioned by Advanced Skin and Hair and conducted by an independent laboratory,

BIOalternatives (http://www.bioalternatives.com) that specializes on tests for pharmaceutical, nutracutical and cosmecuitcal products. “BIOalternatives is a service company offering cell-based assays to support drug and healthcare product development. With more than 10 years of experience, BIOalternatives provides customized informative biological solutions to >200 companies through 16 countries all over the world.

For this test BIOalternatives has developed a novel test to quantify the effects of any compound on Testosterone metabolism in living human skin tissue (reconstructed human epidermis) . The living skin tissues are given equal doses of Testosterone which under common metabolism is converted to DHT and other androgens. The quantity of DHT produced by the test tissue is measured for the control and all compounds being tested for correlation. Each compound is tested on three dissociate tissues to ensure the tests validity.

revivogen hair loss Resuming, Finasteride, when applied topically to an figurative human scalp (scientifically accepted equivilent) which had been infused in Testosterode and 5-alpha reductase, and had been allowed to eventually produce DHT …. was applied topically Finasteride, Dutasteride, and Revivogen.

Finasteride, after a period of time inhibited the presence of DHT by 67%.
Dutasteride, after a period of time inhibited the presence of DHT by 80% and 86% depending on dose.
The compounds in Revivogen inhibited the presence of DHT by 90%.

90% DHT blocking is great news for hair loss sufferers worldwide, Revivogen passed the studies now it has to pass the public test and that’s where things get tougher.

Treadmill Maintenance — 11 Tips for the care of your treadmill

Treadmill Maintenance — 11 Tips for the care of your treadmill

11 steps for the care and cleaning of your treadmill from the Treadmill Sensei.

Keywords:
treadmills, maintenance, cleaning, treadmill sensei, repair

So, you’ve spent the weeks you needed to research, try out, choose and purchase your brand new treadmill. You’ve gotten it assembled and begun your daily workouts…so what now? Well, even the highest end commercial treadmills need a bit of love and affection to keep them purring like a kitten. This guide will tell you everything you need to know to keep your treadmill in tip top shape.

Tip #1
The first thing you are going to want to do is get a good treadmill mat to go underneath your unit. Despite what you think, a treadmill mat isn’t as much for protecting your floor as for protecting your treadmill. You see, a treadmill’s motor builds up a huge static charge as you work out. The charge will suck dust, lint and debris into your motor, causing it to clog and run inefficiently. The more gunk in your motor the worse it will run and the shorter its lifespan will be. Sliding a nice treadmill mat underneath your equipment will help reduce that static and the amount of stuff getting sucked up in it. As a bonus, you’ll also be protecting your floor and carpet. Watch out for cheap mats, tho. If you pick up a budget treadmill mat you run the risk of having it stain your hardwood floor or stick to your carpet. Supermat is a great brand of treadmill mat and can be purchased for as low as $35.

Tip #2
Sticking with dust and dirt, make sure to dust/clean your treadmill once every other week. Take special care with the belt area as any build up should be cleaned off right away or you’ll risk reduced performance.

Tip #3
I know it’s going to sound over obvious, but make sure to keep your power cord well away from the base of the unit and the incline mechanism. You have no idea how many cords we end up replacing on our service calls.

Tip #4
If you find your belt slipping, it may be because the belt tracking is off. You can adjust your tracking the same way you make sure the belt is properly aligned, with the alignment screws at the rear of your treadmill. An allen wrench is all you need. A quick quarter clockwise turn should tighten everything back up. Make sure never to turn either side more than a quarter turn at any given time because you the adjustments levels are very fine. Keeping your belt aligned will reduce the load on you treadbelt and belt guides. Check out your owner’s manual for more information.

Tip #5
A lot of times the cause of miss aligned on a treadbelt is from the unit not being level. Make sure to get your treadmill level.

Tip #6
Unless specifically isntructed by your owner’s manual, do not use silicone or oils to lubricate your treadmill’s deck. A clean, dry, dust-free bed and belt combination is ideal for a long-lasting treadmill. If your manual recommends the use of a silicone spray for lubrication, make sure to precisely follow application and scheduling instructions. Some treadmill decks may require initial waxing to help reduce friction with the belt. Do not wax a deck unless recommended by the manufacturer. Lubrication to pretreated wax decks may interfere with the wax.

Tip #7
The lowest level of friction between your belt and deck is desired. If the amount of friction is too high, you’ll end up with damage and wear to both your motor and your year. The best way to judge a low friction belt is that it will slide when the power is off and you can manually walk the belt when the treadmill is powered down. Improper lubrication can lead to overworking your motor.

Tip #8
One of the main problems on most treadmills (home and commercial) is in the control board. As with any computer, the treadmill’s control board is subject to power surges, improper grounding and so on. The best way to protect your treadmill’s computer brain is to unplug it when not in use and use a grounded plug when powered on.

Tip #9
Read your user’s manual. I know, I know…”who really reads those darn things?” Well, you should. Just about everything you need to know will be found in that little book that came with your treadmill. Pop it open while you’re in the bathroom for a good read.

Tip #10
Never operate your treadmill while wet. Bad idea for so many reasons.

Tip #11
Last but not least, if you are having trouble with your treadmill and need it fixed…then call the Treadmill Sensei! That’s what we do! (Ok, so it’s a shameless plug…but it’s my website so nyah).

Anyway, a few simple steps and you’ll be able to take care of your treadmill so it can continue to help take care of you for years to come

Traveling with Diabetes: 11 tips to make it easy for you

Traveling with Diabetes: 11 tips to make it easy for you

Many diabetics are reluctant to travel for fear of problems with their diabetes. This article provides tips to help diabetics enjoy travel without worries.

Keywords:
traveling with diabetes, travel with diabetes, diabetics and travel, diabetes and travel

Traveling with diabetes requires preparation both before and during your trip. Here are 11 tips to help you make sure your diabetes doesn’t interfere with the pleasures of travel.

1. Visit your doctor at least a month before you leave to make sure your diabetes is under control. If you need to do any stabilizing, a month will give you enough time. The same month should let your body settle down after any necessary immunization shots, so get those at the same time.

2. Get a letter from your doctor certifying that you are diabetic, and listing the various medications and supplies you must carry with you. Without this, you might have difficulties passing through Security at airports and international border crossings.

3. Also get a prescription for your insulin or other diabetes medication. Even though you should have enough syringes, strips and medication to last for the duration of your trip, it’s always good to have a prescription in case you lose them, they become spoiled because of extreme weather conditions, or your trip lasts longer than you original planned.

4. Wear an ID bracelet announcing your have diabetes, and also carry a small card saying so in the local language of the places you will be visiting.

5. Learn to express specific diabetic requirements in the local languages. Since you probably won’t know how to pronounce the words, the easiest way is to carry them on a printed card and simply point to what you want to say.

6. Pack at least twice as much medication and supplies as you think you’ll need. Put half in your suitcase, and half in a special bag that never leaves your possession. The container for these supplies should be sturdy, preferably hard sided, for protection.

7. Carry a sealed pack containing hard candies or glucose tablets in case irregular eating makes your blood sugar drop too low. Your pack should also contain emergency snacks, such as crackers, cheese, fruit, juice — in case you must wait too long between meals, which can happen when we are traveling.

8. Insulin can lose its strength in extreme temperatures, so carry your supply, as well as pills and other medication, in a thermally insulated bag.

9. Carry bandages and first-aid cream, comfortable walking shoes and protective beach shoes. Your feet neet extra special care while you’re traveling.

10. While on your trip, check your blood sugar more often than usual. Many factors, such as fluctuating temperatures and changing time zones, can cause wild swings in your blood sugar levels. If you check often, you’ll be better able to take corrective action as needed.

11. Finally, contact the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers at 417 Center Street, Lewiston, NY 14092. They can provide you with a list of English speaking doctors in the countries you’ll be visiting.

As long as you take sensible precautions to care for your diabetes, there’s no reason why it needs to stand in the way of a happy travel experience. Bon voyage!

Cancer Survivors Move Beyond The Cure

Cancer Survivors Move Beyond The Cure

Doctors have some good news, for a change, about cancer.

Cancer Survivors Move Beyond The Cure

Doctors have some good news, for a change, about cancer. Today, 79 percent of U.S. children diagnosed with cancer survive it. The bad news, however, is that nearly two-thirds will experience physical or psychological problems or learning disabilities as a result of their diagnosis or treatment.

These “late effects” can occur months, even years after cancer has been treated. If survivors don’t know about late effects, they might not associate the problems with the cancer diagnoses and a minor health problem could become a life-threatening issue.

Whatever their child’s health, parents can take a proactive approach. Here are suggestions:

• You are your child’s best advocate. Learn all you can about the diagnosis, treatment protocol and potential complications.

• Maintain a detailed medical journal. From diagnosis on, keep a pen and notepad with you at all times and write everything down. Not only will this assist you during your child’s treatment, it will give you an accessible record for the future.

• Be open and honest with yourself, your family and especially your child. Knowledge about late effects is necessary to help your child lead a full, healthy and productive life.

• Maintain a healthy lifestyle for your family. A good diet during treatment can help minimize side effects. Follow a low-fat, plant-based diet and encourage daily physical activity to increase energy, improve moods, boost self-esteem and stimulate the immune system.

• After treatment, gather necessary information for your child’s continued care.

• Realize that as a result of the cancer or its treatment, your child may have difficulties in school. Meet with administrators and teachers to discuss your child’s needs and health issues. Talk to the teachers about educational late effects and watch for learning problems. If necessary, have your child take a neuropsychological evaluation.

• Be aware that transitioning to “normal life” as treatment ends may cause fear, anxiety and stress.

“It is critical that childhood cancer survivors receive accurate and current information about late effects,” said Stacia Wagner, a National Children’s Cancer Society (N.C.C.S.) survivorship specialist and cancer survivor.

A Sure Shot in Pregnancy Prevention

A Sure Shot in Pregnancy Prevention

This article provides information about another birth control method that does not require a person to wait in line in a pharmacy to make a purchase, subjecting the buyer to unnecessary embarrassment. Depo-Provera, otherwise known as birth control shot is a birth control made up of a hormone similar to progesterone and is given as a shot by a doctor.

Keywords:
birth control shot

Some people may feel embarrassed and find it inconvenient to go to the pharmacy to purchase birth control products. But there is another birth control method that will not require anyone to stand in line for a long time at the local pharmacy. It will also free a person from the usual embarrassment of buying what is considered as a “private” product. The Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension, USP) Contraceptive Injection lasts for 13 weeks, and is highly effective at preventing pregnancy with a failure rate of less than 1%. There are no daily pills to remember, no IUD strings to check, diaphragms or cervical caps to worry about inserting into the proper position — all you have to do to achieve effective contraception.
Depo-Provera stops the ovaries from releasing eggs. It causes the cervical mucus to thicken and changes the uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to enter or survive in the uterus. These changes prevent fertilization. Depo Provera is a very private form of birth control because it cannot be seen on the body and requires no home supplies. It does, however, require a clinic appointment every 3 months. Depo-Provera, otherwise known as birth control shot is a birth control method for women. It is made up of a hormone similar to progesterone and is given as a shot by a doctor into the woman’s arm or buttocks. Each shot provides protection against pregnancy for up to 14 weeks, but the shot must be received once every 12 weeks to remain fully protected. Protection begins immediately after the first shot if given within the first five days of a woman’s menstrual period. After 24 hours, the shot is effective birth control for the next 13 weeks. Many women find it useful to schedule their next shot slightly earlier than necessary. If something prevents them from making their appointment, there will be a window of opportunity to receive their next shot.
Depo-Provera is said to be 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. According to statistics, only about three women out of every 1,000 will get pregnant each year while on this birth control shot. When it is done correctly, Depo-Provera can be a very effective birth control method. It is important to keep in mind that it takes two weeks for the birth control shot to work effectively, so it is advisable to alternate birth control methods, such as using condoms, when receiving the Depo-Provera injection every month.
However, due to the risk of serious health problems, women with unexplained vaginal bleeding or there is a suspected pregnancy, are not recommended to use Depo Provera. It may not also be recommended for women who are planning on becoming pregnant in the near future, are concerned about weight gain, have liver disease, gallbladder disease, or a history of depression. They should study the risks and talk with their health care practitioner as much as possible.
While it is known to be true about any method of birth control, many people who go on Depo-Provera seem to experience a lot of side effects. There are some women who experience irregular or unusual spotting during the first few months that they begin using Depo-Provera, or after long-term use. Although there is not much supporting research, many also believe that the birth control shot can be held accountable for weight gain or fluctuations. There are also reports of hair loss, headaches, abdominal pain and nausea. If a woman experience any of these side effects for longer than two weeks after she had her first birth control shot, it is best to contact a doctor. As always, it is important before making any decision to go on birth control methods to weigh the advantages and disadvantages.
